Summer is almost here and many parents have been asking me what type of sun protection I recommend for their little ones. So, let’s dive into some expert advice on keeping your kids protected from the sun.
General Sun Protection Tips
- For kids over 6 months, mineral sunscreens (those containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) are generally well tolerated and provide broad spectrum coverage.
- Most people don’t use enough sunscreen (1 shot glass is the amount recommended to apply for an adult) so going higher with the SPF will help.
- You should reapply at least every 2 hours and more frequently if you are sweating or swimming.
- Kids tend to rub their eyes as they come out of the pool so a sunscreen stick to frequently reapply in this area is helpful.
- Physical sunscreens are also considered reef safe (so okay when traveling) and do not need to be applied 15 minutes before going outdoors the way chemical sunscreens do.
Sunscreen Brands I Love
There are many brands of sunscreens out there so check the ingredients for those listed above. Brands I love include Blue Lizard, Aveeno, Sun Bum, Vanicream, Cerave and Cetaphil, but there are tons out there.
Additional Sunscreen Advice
However, sunscreen is just one part of a comprehensive sun protection strategy. Whenever possible:
- Schedule outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, either in the morning or late afternoon when the sun’s rays are less intense.
- Seek shade frequently, especially during peak sun hours.
- Encourage your children to wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses to shield their skin and eyes from harmful UV radiation.
Remember, sun protection isn’t just a summer concern—it’s a year-round commitment to your child’s skin health. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can ensure your little ones enjoy the sunshine safely, all season long.
